How can I tell my gutters are blocked without climbing up?
Watch during rain: water sheeting over the front edge, a downpipe running dry while the gutter is full, or a waterfall at one corner. When dry, look for plants growing in the run, staining down the fascia, a gutter line sagging between brackets, and dark tide marks on the wall below. Any of those means it is holding water.
Can blocked gutters cause damp or mould inside the house?
Yes — it is one of the more common paths. Overflowing spouting saturates the wall cladding and the ground at the foundation, and that moisture works inward, showing up as damp linings, musty smells and mould in the rooms behind. Homeowners often treat the mould and repaint repeatedly without ever fixing the gutter that is causing it.
What should I check on the spouting after a big storm?
Look for new sag in any run, brackets pulled away from the fascia, downpipes disconnected at the swage joint, debris dams at corners and valleys, and anything blown onto the roof that is now sitting in the gutter. Storm damage is often partial — the run still works in light rain and fails at the next downpour.
Is a scheduled gutter maintenance plan worth it?
For homes with tree cover, yes. The value is not the cleaning itself but the inspection that comes with it — brackets, joints, fall and fascia all get looked at while someone is already up there, so faults are found at repair cost rather than replacement cost. Moss keeps washing off the roof into my gutters — what fixes that?
Cleaning the gutter treats the symptom; treating the roof treats the cause. Doing both together — treat the roof, then clear the spouting — is the sequence that actually holds.

How do I decide between repairing and replacing spouting?
Count the faults. One leaking joint or one loose bracket is a repair. Leaks appearing in different places each season, corrosion along a run, or a profile that no longer has matching parts available means you are repairing a system at end of life. Age plus repeat callouts is the signal, not any single failure.
Why does my gutter always leak at the corner?
Corners are where thermal movement concentrates. Spouting expands and contracts along its length, and a mitre joint takes that movement at a fixed point until the sealant fatigues and splits. Re-sealing works if the joint is sound; if the corner has opened up or the profile has distorted, replacing the mitre is the durable fix rather than another bead of sealant.
Can a dented gutter be repaired, or does the section need replacing?
Shallow dents that have not creased the profile or broken the coating can often be worked back and left in service. Once the dent has kinked the front bead, cracked a coating on steel or altered the fall, that section should be replaced — a distorted profile traps water and starts corroding from inside where you cannot see it.
My gutter sags between the brackets — what is going on?
Either the brackets are spaced too far apart for the profile, they have pulled out of soft or rotten fascia, or the run has been holding standing water long enough for the weight to deform it. The fix depends on the cause: re-bracket, repair the fascia behind it, or replace the section. Adding sealant does nothing for a sag.
My steel spouting has rusted through in one spot — can it be patched?
A patch on rusted-through steel is a temporary measure at best, because the rust you can see is the end of a process happening along the whole inside of the run. If the rest of the run is sound and the corrosion is localised — usually where debris sat — replacing that length is sensible. Widespread pitting means full replacement.
Can I replace just one run of guttering?
Yes, and it is common — the elevation that gets weather or tree drop usually fails first. The two practical checks are whether your existing profile is still manufactured so joints match, and whether new colour beside weathered colour will look acceptable from the street. On a rear elevation that rarely matters; on the front it often does.
What goes wrong when people replace spouting themselves?
Three things, almost always: the fall is set by eye and ends up flat or backwards, bracket spacing is too wide so it sags within a season, and the fascia is not checked so new spouting is hung on rotten timber. The materials are affordable; the setting-out is the skilled part, and it is the part that determines whether it works.
Are internal or box gutters a problem?
They are higher-risk by design, because there is no outside edge for overflow to spill from — when they block, water goes inside the building envelope instead of down the wall. They need larger outlets, overflow provision and far more regular cleaning than external spouting. Many older Auckland internal gutters get converted to external systems for exactly that reason.

My gutters are clean but still overflow — why?
Cleaning fixes blockage, not capacity or fall. If it still overflows, the usual causes are too few downpipes for the roof area feeding that run, an outlet too small for the flow, a flat or reversed fall, or a valley dumping a large catchment into one short section. Each has a different fix, so the diagnosis has to come before the quote.
Should gutters be level or sloped?
Sloped, gently and consistently, toward the outlet. A run set dead level holds a film of standing water that carries debris and corrodes from the inside; too much fall looks wrong against the fascia line and overshoots at the outlet. Correct fall is set with a line during install — it is not something you can adjust convincingly afterwards without re-bracketing.
How many downpipes should a house have?
It is driven by the roof catchment feeding each gutter run and the local rainfall intensity, not by a fixed number per house. A long run collecting a large roof plane needs more than one outlet regardless of how it looks. If one section of your spouting overflows and the rest never does, that section is almost certainly under-served for outlets.
Where is a downpipe supposed to discharge?
Into the property’s stormwater system, not onto the ground beside the foundation. A downpipe emptying at the base of a wall saturates the ground, undermines paths and drives moisture into the subfloor. If yours discharges to open ground, connecting it properly is usually a small job with a disproportionately large effect on damp problems.
Do gutter guards actually work in heavy rain?
They reduce large-debris blockage; they do not eliminate maintenance, and some designs shed water straight over the edge in intense downpours. Fine grit, seed and moss fragments still get through and build a mat underneath. Treat guards as extending the cleaning interval on a tree-heavy site, not as a permanent replacement for inspecting the gutter.
Are gutter guards worth the money on an Auckland home?
The case is strongest for two-storey homes under mature trees, where each clean is expensive and access is difficult — reducing four cleans a year to two pays for itself. On a single-storey home with modest tree cover, the same money spent on regular cleaning usually buys better outcomes, because the gutter gets inspected each time.
Water runs down behind the gutter instead of into it — what causes that?
Usually a missing or poorly formed roof edge detail, so water tracks back under the roofing and behind the spouting instead of dropping into it. It is a roof-edge flashing problem, not a gutter problem, and it will rot fascia quickly because the timber never dries. Fixing the gutter alone will not stop it.
My gutter only overflows below the roof valley — is that normal?
It is common and it is fixable. A valley concentrates a large roof catchment into a narrow stream that hits one short length of spouting, which then cannot pass the volume fast enough. Solutions include an outlet placed near the valley discharge, a larger profile on that run, or a spreader that widens the flow before it lands.

Does fascia get replaced before or after the spouting?
Fascia first, always. The gutter hangs off the fascia, so replacing spouting onto a rotten board means taking the new spouting off again when the board fails. The correct roofline sequence is fascia, then soffit if affected, then gutter — doing it out of order is the most common reason a homeowner pays for the same run twice.
How do I know if the fascia behind my gutter is rotten?
Look for paint blistering or peeling in a band along the board, dark staining below bracket points, brackets that have pulled or tilted, and timber that gives when pressed with a screwdriver. Rot almost always starts behind the gutter where it stays wet, so a board can look acceptable from the driveway and be soft the whole way along.
Timber or metal fascia — which is better here?
Metal fascia does not rot and needs no repainting, which is why it dominates new work. Timber suits character homes where profile and detail matter, and performs well if it stays painted and the gutter behind it is not leaking. The deciding factor is usually whether the house’s architecture would look wrong with a metal profile.
What causes soffit linings to stain or sag?
Water getting past the roof edge or over the back of the gutter, then sitting on the soffit. Because the soffit is horizontal, it holds that water rather than shedding it, so damage shows there before anywhere else. A stained soffit is a reliable early warning that something at the roof edge or gutter line is not working.
Is it worth doing the whole roofline at once?
If two of the three components are near end of life, yes. Fascia, soffit and spouting share access, scaffolding and set-up, so doing them together costs far less than three separate visits, and the details where they meet get built as one system rather than fitted around existing work. Doing one in isolation often disturbs the others anyway.
Birds are nesting in my roofline — what do I do?
Birds get in through gaps at the soffit-to-wall junction or where roofing meets the fascia, and nesting material then blocks gutters and outlets. The fix is closing the entry points during roofline work rather than trapping anything inside. Clear the debris at the same time — a nest at an outlet will overflow the run in the first real rain.
Should the fascia be painted before the new gutter goes on?
Yes — paint the back face and the top edge while access is open, because those surfaces are unreachable once the spouting is hung. Painting a fascia after the gutter is fitted leaves the exact area that gets wettest uncoated. If both jobs are in your plan, sequence them so the painter has the roofline clear.

Do I need consent to replace my spouting?
Like-for-like replacement of guttering and downpipes is normally maintenance and does not need building consent. Where it can change is if you alter how stormwater is disposed of on the site, or if the work forms part of a larger consented project. If your job involves new stormwater connections, confirm the requirement with Auckland Council first.
How do I choose a spouting profile?
Match the house first, then the catchment. Period homes usually suit a moulded or half-round profile; contemporary homes suit square or quad lines. Then check the profile can carry the water — a smaller decorative profile on a large roof plane will overflow no matter how well it is installed. Colour is chosen last, against roof and fascia.
PVC or steel spouting — what is the practical difference?
PVC will not corrode and handles coastal air well, but expands and contracts more with temperature and can become brittle after long UV exposure. Steel is more rigid, holds long runs and colour better, and is the stronger choice under heavy tree drop. Both perform well when installed with correct fall and bracket spacing; both fail without it.
Does it matter if my gutter and roof are different metals?
It matters a great deal. Incompatible metals in contact — or where runoff from one washes onto the other — set up galvanic corrosion that eats through the less noble metal, often within a few years. Copper runoff onto steel is the classic example. Material compatibility should be checked at quoting stage, not discovered as premature rust.
How far apart should gutter brackets be?
Close enough that the run cannot deflect under a full load of water plus debris — the exact spacing depends on the profile and the manufacturer’s instructions. Under-bracketing is the single most common installation shortcut, and it does not show on handover day. It shows two winters later as a sag that then holds water permanently.
What should I ask a spouting installer before booking?
Ask what the metre rate includes, how many downpipes they are allowing and why, how they will set the fall, what bracket spacing they use for that profile, whether they have checked the fascia, who disposes of the old spouting, and what warranty covers the workmanship. Vague answers on fall and downpipe count are the ones worth worrying about.
Can spouting be installed while it is raining?
Light rain rarely stops gutter work — unlike roofing, the building envelope is not opened up. What does stop it is wind at height and anything that makes ladder or scaffold work unsafe. Cleaning is often done in drizzle deliberately, because running water is the fastest way to confirm the fall and downpipes are actually clear.
What guarantee comes with new spouting?
New spouting carries a workmanship warranty on the terms in your quotation, alongside the manufacturer’s product warranty for the profile itself. Keep both, and keep your cleaning records — product warranties in coastal and high-debris environments generally assume the system is maintained, and a run that has never been cleared is a weak claim.
