What does a concrete driveway cost per square metre in Auckland?
As an indicative 2026 planning range excluding GST, plain broom-finished concrete runs about $100–$160 per m² supplied and laid. These are planning figures, not a quote — the biggest swing in total cost usually comes from what sits under the surface (excavation, base preparation and drainage) rather than the finish on top.
How much more do decorative concrete finishes cost?
On the same indicative 2026 excl-GST basis: coloured concrete around $110–$160 per m², exposed aggregate roughly $120–$200, and stamped or patterned around $130–$230. The premium buys appearance and, with exposed aggregate, better grip on a slope. The structural work underneath is identical, so a decorative finish never compensates for a thin or poorly prepared base.
What is a realistic total budget for a driveway project?
Whole driveway projects commonly run $5,000 to $25,000 once excavation, base course, drainage, reinforcement, the concrete itself and disposal are included. A typical single-car driveway of 40–50m² on a straightforward flat site sits at the lower end. Slope, retaining, poor ground, long runs and vehicle crossing work all push it upward.
Concrete, asphalt, pavers or chip seal — which should I choose?
Concrete is the durable default and handles heavy vehicles and steep grades well. Asphalt is cheaper over large areas and flexes with ground movement but softens in heat. Pavers allow individual replacement and suit patterns and drainage. Chip seal suits long rural-style driveways. Ground conditions, gradient and how much area you are covering usually decide it.
How thick should a concrete driveway be, and does it need mesh?
Thickness and reinforcement are specified for the loads the driveway will carry — a domestic car is a very different case from a truck, a boat trailer or a camper. Reinforcement controls crack width rather than preventing cracking altogether. A quote that does not state slab thickness, mesh or fibre specification and base depth is not comparable to one that does.
How long before I can drive on new concrete?
Foot traffic comes well before vehicle traffic, and vehicles come well before heavy loads — concrete keeps gaining strength for weeks after it looks finished. Driving on it early causes edge damage and cracking that cannot be repaired invisibly. Your contractor will give you specific dates for the pour; treat them as hard dates, not suggestions.
Why does concrete crack, and what are those saw cuts for?
Concrete shrinks as it cures and moves with temperature, so it will crack — control joints simply decide where. Cut at the right depth and spacing, cracks form invisibly at the bottom of the joint instead of randomly across the slab. Cracking outside the joints usually indicates base movement, insufficient thickness or joints cut too late or too shallow.
Should I repair my cracked driveway or replace it?
Hairline cracks in an otherwise flat, stable slab are cosmetic and can be sealed. Cracks with a step between the two sides, cracks that keep widening, or areas that rock underfoot indicate the base has failed — and resurfacing over a failed base simply reproduces the crack. Diagnose the ground first, then decide on the surface.
What should a steep Auckland driveway do differently?
Two things: surface texture for grip in the wet, and drainage that catches water before it reaches the garage or the street. Exposed aggregate or a heavier broom finish beats a smooth trowelled surface on a grade. A channel drain at the base is not optional on a driveway that funnels a whole slope toward a building.
Tree roots have lifted my driveway — what can be done?
Cutting roots to level a slab can destabilise or kill the tree, and some trees are protected under the Auckland Unitary Plan, so this needs checking before anyone starts. Options include a root barrier with a new slab, redesigning the driveway around the tree, or flexible surfaces such as pavers that tolerate movement and can be relaid.
Can I widen my existing driveway and match the concrete?
You can widen it, but expect a visible join and a colour difference — new concrete never matches cured concrete, and the two age at different rates. If the appearance matters, options are replacing the whole surface, using a deliberate contrasting strip so the join reads as a design choice, or a different material for the extension.

Do I need approval to build or change my driveway entrance?
Yes. The section between the road and your boundary — across the footpath and berm — is a vehicle crossing and needs written approval from Auckland Transport before you build or alter it, with a final inspection booked once it is done. That approval is separate from any Auckland Council building consent for work inside your boundary.
What is the difference between a vehicle crossing permit and a building consent?
Different bodies, different scopes. Auckland Transport controls the crossing in the road reserve because it affects the footpath, the kerb and traffic safety. Auckland Council controls building work on your property. A driveway project can need one, both or neither, and assuming a single approval covers everything is a common and expensive mistake.
Does the driveway inside my boundary need building consent?
A straightforward at-grade driveway on your own land generally does not, but it can once retaining, significant earthworks, structural elements or changes to stormwater disposal are involved. Because those are exactly the things a sloping Auckland site tends to require, confirm the position with Auckland Council at design stage rather than after excavation starts.
How wide can my vehicle crossing be?
A standard residential crossing has a defined width at the boundary, with wider crossings and second crossings assessed case by case. Sight lines, distance from intersections, street trees, and existing services in the berm all affect what is approved. Design the driveway after you know what crossing you can have, not the other way around.
What if there are pipes or cables under the berm?
They have to be located before excavation, and any protection, lowering or relocation is arranged with the relevant utility — that is one of the more common causes of delay and cost on crossing work. Service location is a planning step, not a surprise: it happens before the digger is booked, not on the morning it arrives.
Who is responsible if the footpath or kerb is damaged?
The party doing the work in the road reserve is responsible for reinstating it to the required standard, which is one reason the approval and inspection process exists. Ensure your contractor holds the approval and the appropriate insurance before anything happens outside your boundary — reinstatement disputes with a council are not a homeowner’s fight to be having.

When does a retaining wall need building consent?
Under Schedule 1 of the Building Act 2004, a retaining wall is generally exempt if it retains no more than 1.5 metres depth of ground and carries no surcharge or additional load. The measurement is the depth of ground being retained — from the base of the wall’s foundation to the highest point of retained ground behind it — not the visible face height.
What is a “surcharge”, and why does it change everything?
A surcharge is any additional load above the wall beyond the ground itself — a driveway or parking area, a vehicle, a building, deck, garage or shed within influencing distance behind it. Once a surcharge is present, a wall well under 1.5 metres can require consent. This is the detail that catches out the most Auckland homeowners.
When does a retaining wall need an engineer?
Whenever it is consented, and often before that — height, soil type, groundwater, slope above and below, and any surcharge all feed a design. Auckland’s clays hold water and lose strength when saturated, which is precisely the condition that causes walls to fail. Engineering is the cheapest part of a retaining wall and the part that decides whether it stays put.
What does a retaining wall cost?
Retaining projects generally run $5,000 to $35,000. Cost is driven by wall height and length, material (timber pole, concrete block, poured concrete or a proprietary system), machine access, the volume of excavation and spoil to remove, and whether engineering and consent are required. Height matters more than length — loads increase disproportionately as a wall gets taller.
Why is drainage behind a retaining wall so important?
Because water is what actually pushes walls over. Saturated ground behind a wall exerts far greater pressure than drained ground, and Auckland clay holds water. Free-draining backfill, a subsoil drain and an outlet that goes somewhere are not optional extras — a wall with no drainage is a wall designed for a load it will regularly exceed.
Timber pole or concrete block retaining?
Timber pole walls are quicker and cheaper to build and suit garden-scale retaining, with a service life dictated by treatment level and drainage. Concrete block and poured concrete last longer, handle greater loads and suit anything structural or highly visible. Height, surcharge and how long you want it to stand usually decide before aesthetics do.
How do I know if my retaining wall is failing?
Look for lean or bulge that was not there before, cracking or stepping in the face, timber softness at ground level, soil washing out through or under the wall, ground settling behind it, and water seeping through the face after rain instead of exiting a drain. Movement that accelerates after heavy rain is the signal to act on immediately.
Who is responsible for a retaining wall on the boundary?
Generally the party whose land is being supported, but it depends on the history of the site and any registered agreements — and unlike fences, retaining walls are not covered by the Fencing Act’s cost-sharing regime. Check your title and talk to the neighbour early. Retaining disputes are far harder to resolve after a wall has moved.
Is it better to build one tall wall or several terraces?
Terracing can reduce the load on each wall and open up usable garden, but it only works if the walls are spaced far enough apart that the upper wall is not surcharging the lower one — otherwise you have effectively built one tall wall with a gap in it. That spacing is an engineering question, not a landscaping preference.
Can I build a deck or park a car above an existing retaining wall?
Not without checking what the wall was designed for. Adding a driveway, vehicle or structure above a wall applies a surcharge it may never have been built to carry, and it can also convert a previously exempt wall into work that needed consent. Have it assessed before the new work is designed, not after it is built.

What does residential excavation cost?
Excavation work generally runs $2,000 to $18,000 depending on volume, ground conditions, access and disposal. Spoil removal is often the larger half of the bill — Auckland clay is heavy, and cartage and disposal are charged by load. A site a truck can reach costs far less than one where everything is barrowed out through a gate.
What if a digger cannot get to the back of my section?
Then the work is done with smaller machines, more passes and sometimes by hand — all of which cost more per cubic metre. Options include temporary access through a fence line or a neighbouring property with permission, a crane lift for compact machinery, or redesigning to reduce excavation volume. Access is worth resolving before the design is finalised.
How are underground services located before digging?
Service plans are obtained and the site is scanned and hand-verified at critical points before any machine breaks ground. Hitting a gas, power, water or fibre line is dangerous and expensive, and on older Auckland properties the as-built plans are frequently wrong. Verification on site is the step that matters — plans alone are not enough.
What happens to the soil that comes out?
It is loaded and carted to an approved disposal site, and that cartage and disposal is a significant part of the quote. Where the material is suitable, retaining some on site for levelling or landscaping reduces the number of loads and the cost. Contaminated or unsuitable material has its own disposal requirements and pricing.
Do earthworks need a resource consent?
They can. The Auckland Unitary Plan sets thresholds based on the area disturbed and the volume moved, with tighter controls in sensitive areas, on steep land and near watercourses. Small domestic excavation for a driveway or footings is usually well inside the permitted limits; cutting a building platform into a slope frequently is not.
Why is sediment control required on a small site?
Because sediment leaving a site goes into the stormwater network and then into Auckland’s streams and harbours, and councils enforce this. Silt fences, stabilised entranceways and protected stormwater inlets are standard on any exposed ground. It also matters practically: mud tracked onto the road from your job is your contractor’s problem to prevent.
Can I excavate right up to my boundary?
Not without considering what your excavation removes support from. Cutting into ground that supports a neighbour’s land, fence, driveway or building creates both an engineering problem and a liability. That situation normally requires temporary or permanent retaining designed for it, and notification to the neighbour before work starts rather than after their fence moves.
What happens if you hit rock or unexpected fill?
The work stops, the condition is documented and you get a written variation before it continues — the same policy that applies on any of our jobs. Auckland has volcanic rock in some areas and uncontrolled fill in others, and neither is reliably predictable from the surface. A quote that carries no allowance or provisional item for ground conditions is optimistic, not cheap.

Is there a best time of year for groundwork?
Drier months are easier for everything that involves soil: excavation in saturated Auckland clay is slower, messier and harder to compact, and concrete needs suitable conditions to be placed and cured properly. Winter work happens routinely, but it carries more weather stand-downs. If your project has flexibility, the drier half of the year is the calmer run.
How long will I be without my driveway?
Longer than the pour. The sequence is break-out and removal, base preparation, formwork and reinforcement, the pour itself, then a curing period before any vehicle goes on it. Plan alternative parking for the whole window, not just the pour day, and tell your neighbours — kerbside parking pressure is the most common friction on driveway jobs.
What should I ask a civil contractor before booking?
Ask what base depth and compaction they are allowing, what the slab thickness and reinforcement specification is, how drainage is being handled, who obtains the vehicle crossing approval, what happens if unexpected ground is found, where the spoil is going, and what the workmanship warranty covers. Vague answers on base and drainage are the ones that matter.
How is the rest of my property protected while machines are on site?
Access routes are planned and protected, ground protection is used where machinery crosses lawn or paving, and existing services and structures are located and flagged before work starts. Some marking on turf is unavoidable where a machine has to travel. Agree the access route and what gets reinstated before the first machine arrives.
Should I tell the neighbours before groundwork starts?
Yes, and it is worth doing properly rather than by note on the day. Concrete trucks, breakers and diggers are loud, they take up street frontage, and deliveries arrive on tight windows. Neighbours who know the dates are cooperative; neighbours who find out when the breaker starts are the ones who call the council.
Can groundwork be staged across budgets?
Yes, if it is sequenced so nothing gets dug up twice. Do everything below the surface first — drainage, services, retaining, base preparation — and leave the visible surface for a later stage. Staging the other way round, with the paving done before the drainage, is how homeowners end up paying to break out work they finished last year.
What warranty applies to driveways and groundwork?
Civil work carries a workmanship warranty on the terms in your quotation. Note what a warranty can and cannot cover: workmanship, specification and installation are covered; hairline shrinkage cracking within control joints is a normal property of concrete rather than a defect. A good contractor explains that distinction before the pour, not after it.

Where is stormwater from a new paved area supposed to go?
Into an approved stormwater outlet, not onto a neighbour’s land or across a footpath. Adding a large impermeable area changes how much water leaves your site during a downpour, which is why drainage design is part of paving and driveway work rather than an afterthought. On some sites detention or soakage is required rather than direct discharge.
What is an overland flow path and why does it affect my project?
It is the route water takes across your property when the piped system is full or blocked — and Auckland Council maps them. Building across one, or blocking it with a wall or a raised paved area, pushes that water somewhere else, usually into a building. If your site has one, its route constrains where structures can go.
What is the difference between subsoil drainage and stormwater drainage?
Stormwater carries surface run-off from roofs and paving. Subsoil drainage removes groundwater from within the soil — behind retaining walls, under slabs, along the base of slopes. They solve different problems and connecting them incorrectly can cause one to flood the other. A wet section usually needs subsoil work, not more surface channels.
My lawn is permanently boggy — what actually fixes it?
Find the source before installing anything. Common causes are a downpipe discharging to ground, a low point with nowhere to drain, compacted clay with no permeability, and groundwater moving down a slope. The fix ranges from reconnecting a downpipe to a full subsoil system. Topsoil and new turf over an undiagnosed wet spot will simply die again.
What does a concrete slab foundation cost?
Slab and foundation work generally runs $8,000 to $45,000 depending on area, ground conditions, whether the site needs cutting or filling, reinforcement design and the level of engineering involved. Poor ground is the biggest variable — a slab on stable ground and the same slab on soft or filled ground are very different engineering problems.
What is involved in installing artificial grass properly?
Excavate the existing surface, build and compact a permeable base, ensure it drains, lay weed matting, then install, join and secure the turf. Artificial grass projects typically run $3,000 to $22,000 depending on area and site preparation. Almost every failed installation traces back to the base — turf laid on unprepared ground ripples and holds water.
How should I split a landscaping budget?
Landscaping projects run $3,000 to $35,000, and the reliable rule is to spend on the things that are expensive to change later — levels, drainage, retaining, paving and access — before spending on planting, which is comparatively cheap and improves every year on its own. Gardens that were planted before the groundwork was resolved usually get dug up twice.
